I was wondering If anyone had any favorite cryptids (Bigfoot, Yeti, Nessie etc), and perhaps some knowledge to share on the subject? Cryptozoology Is one of my favorite aspects of this kind of hobby, since It borders quite closely to genuine science, and has a higher probability of truth to it. For example, the Thylacine (Tasmanian Tiger) was for many years thought to be a cryptid, a mythical creature without conclusive evidence to prove Its existence. Which was even understandable; A dog with tiger stripes and mouth like a shark, sounds pretty crazy, until they found them: The jaws could open up to 120 degrees. Sadly they went extinct last century, but they did set a precedent that some of these mythical and legendary animals might have some actual, real world counterpart, yet to be discovered.

Well the Megalodon isn't a cryptid, It's an animal known to have existed. Cryptids are animals we don't know exist, but could.
But you are correct, the last place we could find large animals today, is most likely the deep ocean. Personally, I believe in some basis for Sea Serpent and Kraken legends to be a real animal.

This is something I also find quite interesting. My old favourite is sasquatch. However, it has become increasingly difficult to believe a species of large ape-like creatures could be hiding in North America. I hope I'm wrong, but I no longer really believe they exist, at least not on this continent. There is a little hope for you regarding the thylacine. There have been a number of unconfirmed sightings since 1936, leading to speculation that they may not be extinct yet. So there may be a small chance there are still some around. Here is a * list of cryptids*, if anyone is interested.

There's also several organizations, and private persons who has, or might still, be offering rewards for conclusive evidence that the Thylacine still lives.

Thought I'd write a short summary about the Kraken, which in my opinion, is currently a real chance for finding another mythical and legendary monster that actually exists, or have existed.
These days, people probably only know about the Kraken from movies, E.G. Pirates of the Caribbean, wherein It's depicted as a squid of monstrous size capable of sinking large sailing vessels. And that's really the most common popular depiction these days, stemming from old maritime folklore of sailors describing squids or octopuses of great sizes. The actual legend though, stretches back over 1000 years, to the Viking age, where the first mention is found in the form of the Norse Sagas.
There's 2 versions of the Kraken, the real version, and the legendary version. The legendary Kraken; The legend was born of the Norse Sagas, and was described as being so large, It was mistaken for islands. From the Viking Age, to the Age Of Sail, the legend persisted, but morphed somehow into the modern depiction we have of large squid or octopi attacking sailing ships. There's no scientific basis of any cephalopod reaching the size where It could attack, much less sink ships. And, the real Kraken; Colossal Squids, the largest species of cephalopod, are estimated, conservatively, to reach a maximum length of 14-15 meters. Though some scientists claim that this species, separate from the Giant Squid, can reach lengths meeting, or exceeding 20 meters. For comparison, the HMS Victory, and 100 gun Ship of the Line from the 1700s, is 70 meters in length. Sailing ships of the period, and earlier would rarely exceed this length, as the Victory was a 1st rate war ship, the largest type of ships at the time. In theory, should Colossal squids reach sizes of 20 meters, while not able to sink, or attack ships, such a sighting would definitely explain the origins of the Kraken.
