This topic should be of interest to Vincent Van Ghoul and litch. Want to share your stories, view points, deck ideas and so forth about this ccg?
As litch certainly remembers, the tournament scene in this area used to be fairly bad. The local dci judge and a select few players were a tight knit group that wanted to make sure only they stayed at the top of the players in this area. The juddge, 'Joey', acted friendly enough, but if you weren't one of his chosen few, he did everything he could to keep you from winning his tournaments.
One time I was playing against 'Cal'. I was using blue control that used Grindstone to win. His deck was white weenie, with Serra Avatar as a key card. I won the first game, but it took about a half hour of the 45 minute time limit. The second game was not going so well. He played Serra Avatar something like four to six turns in a row, and everytime I countered it, of course, it went back into his deck. It came to the point where I knew my best hope was to survive until the time limit expired. Up to that point, Joey had always ruled that after the current turn ended the other player got one last turn, then the game was over.
That wasn't the case this time. When the deadline came up, Joey came up and decided we should play until the game was finished. I was quite annoyed as that basically meant he had ruled that my round win would now be a round draw. Several turns later, my inevitable defeat happened. I started gathering up my cards to get my deck ready for the next round when Joey decided that we should have a tie breaker, and that the first player who took damage or lost life would lose. I was greatly frustrated. Joey knew very well that the only possible way my deck could do damage was with one of my four Faerie Conclaves, and that the only way I had of countering Cal's almost certain first-turn creature was with Force of Will, which causes life loss. Joey had basically just handed the game to Cal. Even my foe gave him a strange look.
My turn was first, and I had the luck to draw a Conclave, but it was likely for naught. I played it. Cal's turn was next. He played a Plains, and... that was it! I then had enough mana to counter any creatures he cast on his next turn, and on my third turn I got the Hail Mary victory. Joey looked very annoyed. Of course, in the first playoff round I went up against a deck that ate blue control alive, but my day was already made.
And that is my tale of triumph.
